The main Square

Christmas Holidays are over and we are back to work.Christmas markets are a tradition in many European cities. Bruges, Rothenburg, Strasbourg, Nuremberg are some of the famous ones.
Bruges is one of the picture perfect fairytale town I have ever visited. It is a magical combination of history, traditional European Squares, street-side cafes, Winding waterways, picturesque waterfronts and of course the mouthwatering waffles and the darkest chocolates of all shapes and flavors.

From the busy streets of Paris, the quaint town of Bruges was a very fresh change. Driving from Paris, we reached Bruges late afternoon. As we entered the town it was looking mesmerizing with the sun rays falling on the pointy buildings. My excitement grew more as we reached our hotel. The whole city looked like a medieval town with a touch of history at every corner. The main square is the perfect place for people watching. It has a very cozy flavor of the medieval times with the bell tower ringing every fifteen minutes. There are lots of restaurant surrounding the square which are very ♿️accessible (as compared to some of the other restaurants in old town of Bruges which are not accessible). One of the signature dishes in those restaurants are steaming mussels and Belgium beer served in Pauwel Kwak Glass with a Wooden Holder.

The 13th-century belfry, a municipal carillon comprising 48 bells and the Church of Lady Guadalupe are the famous landmarks to visit. My favorite is the “Groenerei” which is the canal front especially at the cross section of the Nieuwstraat and Dijver. You can walk ,drive or take a boat tour along the canals and enjoy this charming city with a waffle break in between. The boat rides are every half an hour. It starts from the corner of Nieuwstraat and Dijver.

Bruges is also very famous for its Christmas Market. During the Christmas time Bruges main square is packed with food, drink and craft stalls with an ice skating rink in the centre all under the beautiful backdrop of the Belfry of Bruges. The narrow streets leading away from Market Square to the canal are lined with variety of Christmas shops selling everything from decorations to the famous Belgian chocolate.
