The road trip along the Adriatic Coast is simply breathtaking. The living fairytale town of Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful places on the Adriatic coast and hence the name Pearl of the Adriatic.
The rich history, warm people, old world charm of traffic-free Stari Grad (old town), city wall, the delicacies of fine Dalmatian cuisine, and the easy wheelchair accessibility of the town make this a perfect cozy destination for everyone. With some extra time in Dubrovnik, one can do a day trip to Korcula, Ston, and some other Balkan countries of Bosnia – Herzegovina and Montenegro. In this blog, I will be covering wheelchair-friendly activities and places in Dubrovnik.
Stradun ( Old town of Dubrovnik)
The old town of Dubrovnik is a promenade of old-world shopping malls packed with cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, and many more. One of the best places for people watching where everybody is strolling, flirting, gossiping, and licking exotic ice cream. This place is mostly wheelchair accessible. There are some steep slopes but they are doable for wheelchair users. The city hall and St Blaise’s Church are the two famous sights here. There are two gates from where you can enter the old town. Pila gate and the Ploce gate. The old port is closer to the Ploce Gate and you can enjoy some picture moments there. You will also find some tour operators for the side trips from Dubrovnik.
Wheelchair accessibility ♿️ ♿️ ♿️
- Ploce gate is wheelchair accessible and it’s better to enter through it.
- There are a few wheelchair parking in front of Ploce gate.
- There are some steep paths but they are manageable
- Some of the shops have a step at the entry
- You can almost go to all the inner roads except a few that has stairs.
- You can get the Panoramic view of the old town from the Ploce gate
- There is a wheelchair-accessible restroom near the Ploce gate.
- When it rains the streets in Stradun become very slippery. So if you are in a wheelchair, assistance will be required.
Dubrovnik – Cable car
The Cable car to the top of Mount Srd is also a wheelchair-friendly activity from where you can enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the Elaphiti Islands. There are two levels at the top. You can use the elevator. There is a restaurant there from where you can enjoy the full 360 degrees Panoramic view of the old town with the red roof. If you want you can also drive to Mount Srd.
There is wheelchair-accessible parking by the side of the cable car.
The staff at the cable car is very helpful.
Dubrovnik city walls
One of the very famous activities in Dubrovnik is walking the walls and looking at the spectacular view of the red roofs against the vast Adriatic sea. This is a wheelchair-friendly activity but might need a little assistance. You can enter at the Ploce gate. At the entrance of the wall, there is a tiny step that is manageable if you are using a wheelchair.
Rector’s Palace
Most part of this museum is wheelchair accessible. There is an elevator that takes you from the courtyard to the mezzanine level and the first floor.
The Franciscan Monastery Museum
The Franciscan Church and Monastery’s little houses are one of Europe’s oldest working pharmacies that survived the devastating earthquake of 1667. Monastery’s inner courtyard provides a quiet reprieve from Dubrovnik’s bustling Old Town. This place is fully wheelchair accessible.
Wheelchair accessible tips
- It is advisable to stay near Ploce gate as the entry from Ploce gate is easy and there are quite a few accessible parking spots there.
- If you want to enjoy the breathtaking view of the Dubrovnik downtown from your room then Hotel Excelsior is a very good choice. The hotel has a spectacular view of the old town from its rooms, breakfast area, and restaurants. It is also completely wheelchair accessible. - With a car, you can drive around the city to some spectacular viewpoints which is yet another wheelchair-friendly activity.
- As you are driving into the town of Dubrovnik, after crossing the tunnel follow the direction to Ploce gate. After the cable car station, take a sharp right on Zagrebacka UI and get a picturesque view of the town from there.
- For a side trip from Dubrovnik to Mostar( Bosnia- Herzegovina) and the Bay of Kotor( Montenegro) you can either drive or it’s better if someone else does the driving for you who is more knowledgeable about the place.
- Very Friendly and knowledgeable Pepo Klaic drove us there. He really made our experience very informative and meaningful. He has knowledge of wheelchair-accessible places and is also very helpful while navigating the uneven path in Mostar.
