Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s hometown on the banks of the River Avon, blends modern amenities with historical charm. The town boasts Shakespeare’s birthplace, Anne Hathaway’s cottage, and the church where the couple is buried. Our primary reason for visiting was to experience 16th-century theater at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre and see a live show. The theatre’s unique one-room setup harkens back to Shakespearean times, offering an intimate experience where actors and audience share the same space.
We explored Anne Hathaway’s cottage during our visit, took a boat cruise on the River Avon, and strolled down Bridge Street. Stratford-upon-Avon also serves as a convenient base for day trips to the picturesque Cotswold district of England.
The Royal Shakespeare Theatre offers excellent wheelchair accessibility with ramps at the Bridgefoot entry and accessible seating arrangements. Bridgefoot Street along the River Avon is entirely wheelchair accessible, ideal for leisurely walks. Anne Hathaway’s cottage also provides wheelchair access and detailed accessibility information can be found on Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s website.
